Description

Took half the day off to prepare for this adventure at Livingston Lake in Alma. I got to the site and forgot my camera bag.... DOH! Richard was kind enough to lend me his camera Canon 350D and Mathieu introduced me to a new inexpensive lens, Canon 50mm F/1.8 fixed lens. Took a great manually guided exposure of the North American nebula (12min exposure ISO 200). Quite impressive. One thing I learned about my camera, the F ratio is not automatically set to the widest setting. This explains why my shots of the mily way with the stock lens didn't turn out as good as I thought.

Description

This was my first deep sky image in quite a while. Seems PHD guiding is having some trouble guiding over 5min. Not sure what has happened. 90% of the frames taken that night were bad. Hence this image is over processed since I only had 3 frames to work with. I will continue to add new images as I get them.

Description

I was suprised I was able to get this good of an image here in the city of this object with no filters. Especially since it is so low on the horizon.

Date: December 12, 2009
Author: Tim Doucette
Telescope: Orion 80ED Apo Refractor
Mount: Celestron AS-GT
Guiding: C9.25 via Orion Starshoot
Camera: QHY8
Site: DSE Observatory
Exposure: 18 x 15min = 4.5 hours
Effective Focal Length: 600mm
Effective Focal Ratio: f/7.5

Description

This was my longest exposure time 15min so far with no drift. Very windy on a couple of nights but I decided to use the frames anyway. No filter or focal reducer. I see now that some sort of light pollution filter will be needed to capture the red nebula in the horsehead.

Description

This was a first attempt at this nebula. I will need to at least double the exposure time collect more frames for this to be worthwhile.

Exposure: 12 x 5min @ G=1 O=56 = 1 hour
Effective Focal Length: ~600mm
Effective Focal Ratio: f6.3

Description

This was one of my longest exposed images. There are problems with this image however I thought I would post it anyways. I have found the culprit to some color issues I was having. Seems it is the focal reducer. Time to get a WO reducer.

Description

This is the eastern part of the Veil Nebula, a supernova remnent. This image came out suprisingly better than I thought it would considering it was taken in the part of the sky with the heaviest amount of light pollution. Here is an original frame before processing.

Description

This is my second attempt with the Orion 80ED scope. I noticed that the field is not as flat as I would have liked in the top left corner (you can see elongated stars). I'm going to try my focal reducer and see if this helps. As you can see there is a lot of background noise. I managed to only take two dark frames before my battery in my camera went dead.

This is a composite shot consisting of two areas, the center region and the outer region (combined in PSP).

This is the first image taken from my new observatory. Imaging just got a whole lot easier. no more 1 1/2 hour wasted setting up and tearing down the equipment.
